[series]: Angel
[character]: Krevlornswath (Lorne) of the Deathwok Clan
[character history / background]: Wikified, darlings
[character abilities]: Again with the wiki, it's so convenient!
[character personality]: One thing you can say about Lorne is that when he's in, he's in up to his neck. His emotions, he feels them as purely as a person can. He'll never say he's going to do something and then back out - he'd rather straight up refuse. Once he does decide to do something though, he's committed completely until the end.

When life is good, Lorne is bubbly, peppy, an upbeat hipster type of demon. Sure, he's green and horned but does that mean he's an evil being from another world? Not in this lifetime. The guy peppers his speech with endearments and colorful adjectives that don't even have to make sense. He's been saved from the hell of his homeworld and plunked into this beautiful place, where he gets to sing, drink and rub elbows with all kinds of great people. He's flirtacious and doesn't discriminate between men and women; if you're beaufitul, he'll tell you in the most colorful way he can think of. In fact, it's almost as if he's trying to make you blush. Lorne's hedonistic as hell and loving it; pile on the sweet things in life and you'll have a happy green crooner on your hands, willing to read your aura and tell you your future. To a point. Like more seers, clairvoyants and precognitives, Lorne has mastered the art of the vague. Giving away too much is just as bad as keeping his mouth shut, and he's pretty adamant about keeping his mouth shut when he thinks it's best. Which is often, though his resolve is actually pretty flimsy. As stubborn as he may seem at first, if the puppy dog eyes are put on him hard core, Lorne will definitely fold, it's just a matter of when and how hard he's worked.

Of course if you're a tall, dark and brooding vampire name Angel all you have to do is give Lornikins the old puppy eyes and he'll break good and hard. It doesn't help that Angel has a gang of very attractive people that tag along behind him, either. They test his stance on neutrality more than once, which is something he'd been happy to keep in place. As long as there was no violence in his club, Lorne would help anyone who came in whether they were considered good or bad. It's something that doesn't get knocked out of him entirely, even by the end of the series, though it's softened here and there when he's faced with despicable acts, which he has no problem being very vocal about. Especially if they happen to someone he loves, which is everyone on the Team Angel.

There are two different bad sides to Lorne. There's the bitch and the miserable. If a person crosses them, they'll be met with the bitch, slinging a slew of sarcasm and cynical remarks. He won't hesitate letting them know what he thinks of them or how they've wronged him. He almost reaches the point of whining, and he's completely aware of it. If it seems like he's being unfair, he probably is and he's probably doing it intentionally. Sometimes the remarks are simply a way for him to get his problem off his chest so that he can move on, but Lorne's very able to hold a grudge for an indefinite amount of time. He'll also use it in order to avoid a completely unrelated issue, trying to provide a distraction because he's a terrible liar.

Then there's Lorne's misery. If he has a run of bad luck, Lorne easily slips into a bit of a depression. He'll complain and whine a lot and blame everyone for everything wrong in his life. He's aware that he's being a big baby, and he'll indulge himself for awhile, letting that inner hedonist out in a way. Kind of like immersion therapy - he's very low for a short period of time, until he pulls himself up by the bootstraps and starts anew. He's been shown to do this in a few major ways - when his club was destroyed (twice), when he has a hard time hacking it at the evil law firm where he works with Angel helping out the evil people they used to fight, and finally when he's asked to kill a former enemy-turned-ally for Angel. In all of these examples, he hits rock bottom, but eventually turns it around to live his life with a smile on his face, except for the last. Killing Lindsey was a show of his resolve once he's agreed to do something, and how much it affects him as a person to hurt another being, even though Lindsey had been a long time enemy.

A metaphor for Lorne's life as a performer, his peppiness and lust for life is sometimes a shield, something Lorne sees as his duty. Lorne's motto would definitely be the cliched "the show must go on." His powers give him glimpses into people's lives, which are usually never sunshine and lollipops. He's often giving people bad news or trying to help them set their paths straight or get out of trouble. He rarely lets this mechanism down - even when he's being cynical, he isn't outright pessimistic. When he does break down to that level, he's quick to put the facade back in place and continue moving, even if it's killing him to do so. He has to keep up appearances for the people that he cares about, a burden he's placed on himself and shoulders very willingly.

A major facet of Lorne is his neutrality. He truly relishes the gray matter in life - refusing to really see the black and white, good and evil parts of people. To Lorne, people are people, whether they do awful things or good things. Everyone deserves a chance and deserves guidance. While he does hold grudges, he's a very forgiving person, seeing past fault and evil to the matter beneath. Whether it was at Caritas and reading his clients or at Wolfram and Hart, catering to his evil clients, Lorne could see past right and wrong to a bigger picture. In a way, the fact that unlike his homeworld, Earth isn't in black and white is like Christmas morning to him. This doesn't mean he's without morals. Lorne will be the first to denounce something that turns his stomach; especially if it's hurting another being whether they're good or evil. He provides perspective for Team Angel, without the judgement everyone else seems to possess. Whether this is because he's empathic, from another world or is striving to keep his time in this one enjoyable doesn't really matter so much as the fact that he's willing to be vocal about it.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Post AtS 5.22, Not Fade Away

[journal post]:
[Lorne and portals don't equal fun times. They equal very not fun times.] Oh, God. No, not another portal. Why me? [He takes in his surroundings, and his tone changes to appreciative.] Well, now I can't complain about this. Very genre! So camp! Give me a top hat, cane and some tails and I won't even need speakers!

[Into the phone.] Hello out there, all you charming strangers. At least I hope you're charming because if not then you're only strangers and that's a little scary. Any chance I can get one of you to help little ol' Lorne out and tell me where in Minelli's finely coiffed updo I am?

[third person / log sample]:
"Don't let me lose this dream / Baby, baby hold on."
Lorne's voice resonates softly in his chest. He never really had a home before that song. Music is his home; wherever he can play, sing and share it, that's where he belongs.

He doesn't really need other people. Not like people need people. Even though they're the luckiest people-- right, anyway. Lonliness? It doesn't really apply as long as he has Aretha, Frank, Nat and Fred. He's like a rock or a lone wolf with really great pitch. Yeah, that howl of his is dead on, a perfect high C.

But even lone wolves have acquaintances, right? The odd fox here, maybe an owl or a doe there. Coming to the wolf for his advice and wisdom. All animal metaphors aside, Lorne knows he's not in the champion gang, not really. He's okay with sticking to the outskirts, piping in every now and then. As long as it's more then than now.

Well, lately it's been more now and always, rather than once in awhile. It doesn't help that Angel-lashes and company gives him the doe eyes every time they come visit him. He can't help it if he's a sucker for tall, dark and piercing. Lorne is used to reading people's auras, seeing their futures - there's a pattern, a predictable path that most creatures share. Even himself, regardless of all of his denials. He knows he's in deep and he's been fighting it since the gang walked into his bar.

"If I lose this dream / It's goodbye love and happiness, yes."
The words bloom out into the space of an empty Caritas, filling up what's left of the lonliness Lorne refuses to recognize.

[supplemental 3rd person sample]:
There's nowhere far enough for him to run from what he did. No encores. One last bow in front of the curtain, and it's not even one he can be proud of.

Is this what he'd signed up for all those years ago, when he'd first heard Angel's soulful rendition of 'Mandy'? No, of course not; signing up would mean he’d had a choice in the matter at all, and if Lorne's learned anything about life, himself and the world it's that choices? Supremely limited. The die roll and the chips fall and whatever other metaphor he can't think of at the moment that signifies the lack of choice they all possess. The house just keeps winning, better to give in and accept it.

That first miracle: leaving Pylea? That wasn't a choice, not really. The opportunity arose and what other route could he have taken? Run away and that was that. Flee to escape the scrutiny and hatred. Get out before he turned into one of the bigoted, thick-skulled beasts they wanted him to be. He was supposed to defy that fate, and he'd kept up his vow just fine until the Champions came along. Then it was all readings and advice, Lorne we need this, can't you tell us this? Let us blow up your club and drag you into the life of a Champion. He isn't a Champion. He was supposed to have been a contact that just sent them on their merry way whenever they needed a clue.

He got sucked in, that's what happened. Lorne gave into his true nature, with all their good deeds and righting wrongs. The inner Deathwok in him gravitated toward the chaos, the hunt and the glory. Okay, that’s probably a little extreme. Who can blame him? His life is in tatters now, and the people he loved aren't those people anymore. None of them had deserved any of this!

Oh, who is he kidding? He was the first one in that Wolfram & Hart limo; he knew exactly what he was getting himself into. The signs were coming since the beginning and what did he do? Talked Christina off a ledge, had lunch with a Baldwin and schmoozed the twins. A chain of events leading to a moment he never thought he'd be a part of. Well, not like this anyway. Gee, for a guy that sees people's futures, he’s certainly terrible at seeing the only one imminent for himself. Especially with the history he'd seen.

Everyone who followed Angel seemed to compromise their lives in one way or another. Wesley, Connor, Cordy, Gunn. Then Fred; the one person on the planet farthest from deserving the fate she saw. That alone should have tipped him off. Angel wasn't just going down, they all were and that was the only choice they really had. Follow Angel, help the helpless.

In truth, he can't regret his path because that would mean regretting all the good parts. The loving family they'd become simply by wanting to fix the world. He supposes if he had to do it all over again -- no that was a useless thought. Nobody gets the luxury of a do-over. Things happened the way they did and there isn't a damn thing anyone could do about it.

Not anymore. No more following, no more helping; he’s out. He is swearing off readings and guidance and all the rest of it. Lorne is officially closed for business. Put up the billboards, tape up the lot. His well has run good and dry and nothing will change his mind on that, ever. Now that he has a new home to start over in, he can become Lorne 2.0. Put on a new show and never get attached again.
